SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Ripping across the Arizona desert in a new limited edition of the most powerful American sports car, a grand touring variation of Dodge's awesome Viper totes an enormous engine with ten cylinders of muscle pumping up the strength of 460 horses as translated through six forward gears into downright frightening linear speed. Based on the GTS coupe, this new limited-edition ACR -- American Club Racer -- reveals styling cues drawn from Viper's GTS-R world-champion GT2 race car. Its engine boosts power by 10 points, with 60 pounds of body weight pared for more speed and the Koni street-car suspension components replaced with GTS-R equipment plus Meritor springs so this snake can make the most of its 18-inch high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The result? A steroid-induced Viper which can blow everything else off the road -- and it's street-legal. It's also quite rare, as less than 200 units will be cast at Viper's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit. Viper's ACR special edition ranks as one of three production variations for Dodge's supercar as configured with 1999 badging and colors. The original Viper RT/10 roadster was replaced in 1996 by the GTS coupe, Viper's first hardtop, which added concessions for comfort and convenience like glass side windows and exterior door latches. For 1999, both coupe and roadster continue, although each carries further enhancements with huge 18-inch aluminum wheels and six paint choices -- including new red, silver or black. Beneath the dramatic shape, there's that classic arrangement of components in a tubular steel space frame, with engine up front and rear-wheel thrust setting the stage for a neo-interpretation of an earlier snake on pavement, Carroll Shelby's '60s-vintage Cobra. In any iteration, Viper contains no compromises. It looks outrageously vicious with an exaggerated prow and curt tail, but it's all engine, with sparse cockpit space and room for only the driver and a close companion. The RT/10 is noisy, cantankerous at times, and it has a jury-rigged ragtop roof that leaks when it rains. Refinements effected in 1996 included swapping original exposed side pipes for a rear exhaust system to meet On-Board Diagnostic regulations in Europe, where Dodge continues to build recognition for the car. The GTS coupe brought further refinements for civility and comfort, while a hardtop roof and window glass dampened the thunder of Viper's engine to a respectable roar. Suspension components in cast aluminum for the coupe pared 60 pounds from the original Viper's overall weight, and the revised geometry set up a more stable and compliant behavior during hard cornering. The fully independent front and rear suspensions employ unequal length upper and lower A arms with coil-over springs of alloy steel and high-performance gas-charged shocks. Steering, exceedingly quick and direct, stems from a power-assisted rack and pinion system with fast steering ratio of 16.7:1. High-performance disc brakes get huge 13-inch vented rotors at all four wheels and 4-piston front calipers, which meet design goals of running a Viper from zero to 100 mph and back to zero again in less than 15 seconds. Pulse of any Viper comes from a humongous engine, the 8.0-liter V10. It's the only 10-cylinder pumper for a sports car outside of Formula One competition racers. Using a thin-wall aluminum alloy block to trim weight, the massive V10 has a 4-inch bore and 3.88-inch stroke, which help push output to 450 hp in tandem with awesome torque production to 490 lbs/ft. Tweaking the ACR version for free breathing nets an additional 10 hp, as torque runs up to an even 500. A sophisticated 6-speed manual gearbox, with synch shifting and reverse lockout, mates to Viper's monster engine -- and it's entirely malleable. Also, Viper has adjustable foot pedals which can move mechanically up to four inches in fore-aft range to adapt to an individual driver's legs. The interior fits tight like Spandex. Twin bucket seats trimmed in comfy perforated leather contain firm cushioning for lateral support when cornering. A 3-spoke magnesium steering wheel, wrapped in leather, tilts and telescopes to adjust. Among various instruments in the cluster, the speedometer calibrates to 200 mph. Safety systems include twin air bags and Viper's steel cage construction, with steel beams in side doors, plus a theft alarm. Missing from Viper's list of safety elements is the option of anti-lock brakes and a traction controller. The ACR competition package for Viper elevates Viper GTS coupe to a race-ready entry for American GT contests -- it's equipped with all of the necessities, including 5-point safety belts. Engine modifications for the ACR were limited to adding smooth intake hoses and a free-breathing air filter to provoke better air flow, but 60 pounds of excess weight were whittled away from the production GTS by removing Viper's air conditioner, fog lamps and stereo audio system. Exterior changes appear rather modest, as the racer wears subtle "ACR" badges visible on front side panels near the unique one-piece BBS wheels. The chance to play with a black ACR Viper occurred recently at Scottsdale, with substantial front-end time devoted to squeezing into the tight cockpit and cinching up the 5-point racing harness. Crank it over and the throaty rumble of Viper's massive engine shakes the body and sends shivers through the skin in anticipation of lightening-quick action. Run fast up the gears and Viper pins shoulders to seat through the first four, each increment building speed and driver's pulse. In turns it acts with uncanny agility, hunkering low and sticking hard around every bend. How fast is it? In official trials Viper GTS runs from zero to 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds, while my unofficial top speed on a track clicked several points beyond 175 mph.

Pound Ridge, New York Executive Details would like to thank ML for the opportunity to detail his new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. This machine received a Swissvax detail outlined below and we are proud to have him as an Executive Details Signature Concierge Client. Here is a quick write up from Car and Driver regarding the Superleggera.
The Superleggera is the hard-core version of Lambo's entry-level supercar, the Gallardo, trimmed of 126 pounds, thanks to the extensive use of Superman-hard but lightweight carbon fiber. The engine cover, the rear diffuser, the underbody cover, the exterior mirrors, the rear spoiler, the side sills, and the inner door panels are all made of carbon fiber, and some of the glass—the rear window, for one—has been replaced with lighter-weight polycarbonate. Removing 126 pounds from a supercar is a good thing, but bear in mind that the 3434-pound curb weight is hardly light, as declared by the Italian term superleggera ("super light").
While Lamborghini was shedding weight, it added 11 horsepower to the already enormous 512 horsepower that the Gallardo makes from its 5.0-liter V-10 engine. According to Lamborghini, the power increase came from changes to the engine software and a bigger intake manifold. Torque remains at 376 pound-feet, peaking at 4250 rpm. The six-speed e-gear automated manual transmission is a no-cost alternative to the six-speed manual.
Lamborghini has fitted the 19-inch wheels with sticky Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber that is optional on the base Gallardo. The suspension settings are carried over, according to Lamborghini. Carbon-ceramic brakes are an option on the Superleggera.

In addition to all the carbon-fiber pieces inside and out, the Superleggera gets a number of interior changes, including Alcantara, a synthetic suede, in place of leather on the dashboard. European versions get special lightweight bucket seats, but the U.S.-bound cars have the Gallardo's optional sport seats, which weigh 66 more pounds than the buckets because they have built-in side airbags.
The car certainly looks fantastic. The Gallardo may be four years old, but its shape still turns heads almost off their necks. Especially in bright Orange. Inside, the black Alcantara is relieved by orange stitching and motifs.

The carbon-fiber inserts and inner door panels look terrific, but the numbers on the dials are tricky to read. Unlike Lambos of yore, in which electrical items and the air conditioner had the faithfulness of Wilt Chamberlain, the audio, HVAC, and navigation systems in this car work perfectly. Put that down to corporate overlord Audi's influence. The squared-off steering wheel has a cheesy plastic piece screwed onto its base, but we didn't hear any complaints about the driving position or the visibility from inside this mid-engined car.

The e-gear transmission has its good and bad points. In automatic mode, the shifts are clunky and never quite happen when you expect them to. If you resort to manual mode, effected by a pair of elegant, fixed paddles on either side of the steering column, it works much better. If smoothness is a goal, avoid sport mode, where shifts are very fast—about 0.2 second each—and brutal enough to jerk your neck back and forth. For drivers desperate to impress bystanders, we recommend a launch-control start. Since the Gallardo was introduced, this procedure has been revised. Now the driver simply puts the car into gear, switches off the stability control, engages the sport mode, releases any pressure on either pedal, and then stomps on the gas. The engine revs to about 5000 rpm, the clutch is dumped, all four wheels spin, and the car departs like a cat on a lighted range.
With its soft and sticky Pirellis, we expected better than 0.97 g on the skidpad, especially since that '04 Gallardo had managed 1.00 g. This may have been because of some overly exuberant lapping at GingerMan Raceway the evening before the car was tested, leaving the P Zero Corsas in less than pristine condition. The Superleggera certainly performed well enough on the track, recording lap times comparable with those of a Z06.
With its stiffened suspension and improved power-to-weight ratio over the Gallardo, the Superleggera feels like a more finely honed weapon at max attack. The steering is nicely weighted and has plenty of feel (if not as much communication as a Porsche GT3's or Ferrari F430's), and the handling is reasonably idiot-proof. There's initial understeer that mutates into neutrality with the application of power. The car drifts nicely, but you have to provoke it mightily to get the tail sliding with the stability system switched off. On the street, it just cleaves its way through corners. The ride is firm but relatively supple, although expansion joints and potholes crash through the body structure with jack-hammer ferocity.
So far, so good. The only problem with the Superleggera came in stopping it. The car manages the 70-mph-to-standstill braking test in a stellar 150 feet, and the anchors work fine on the track. But the brake-pedal feel, at anything other than full retardation, is awful. We can't recall anything with brakes this sensitive, a trait that isn't helped by the clutch seemingly grabbing on downshifts. Virtually all our drivers embarrassingly lurched to a halt at a stoplight, no doubt encouraging other drivers to think uncharitably about their driving prowess. Fuel consumption wasn't exactly a strong point, either, with an overall figure of 12 mpg in our hands.
The Superleggera is a sensational car, but it's also hugely expensive at a base price of $224,800, a premium of nearly $30,000 over the base Gallardo. Our test car, optioned with carbon-ceramic brakes, a leather steering wheel ($650), an anti-theft system ($665), floor mats ($650), a navigation system ($3250), and the Travel package ($360), ran to a cool $245,975. It sounds like a lot of extra money over a Gallardo, but a Superleggera is a good $100,000 less than a comparably equipped Murciélago LP640, about as quick in a straight line, and a lot less of a handful on a track. If you look at it that way, it's something of a bargain for Lambo fanciers.
ORIGINS OF A NAME
The literal translation for superleggera is "super light." The term was most widely used by Touring of Milan, an Italian body designer and builder, although its intention was to describe a form of light and rigid body construction where aluminum panels were wrapped around a framework of small-diameter steel tubes. Among the cars fitted with superleggera bodywork were the Aston Martin DB4 and DB5 and the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta.

Rye Brook, New York Executive Details welcomed the fantastic Spring weather with an Executive Premier Detail on this 2005 Harley Davidson. This Harley Davidson spent a long Fall and Winter in a shed and needed the Executive Details touch to bring it back to life. The Swissvax certified technicians performed a compete aluminum and chrome polishing process to restore the metals to their proper appearance. The seat then was also treated with a two part Leatherique process to rejuvenate and protect the soft leather from the harsh summer heat. The custom paint was then polished to perfection and then treated with two coats of Swissvax Mystery to bring out the paint's depth and shine. Simply spray or wipe onto the surface and massage into the leather with your hands. Allow for it be absorbed into the fibers. Rejuvenator Oil has a unique capillary action which forces proteins into the leather and dirt out! Repeated use will keep leather in tip top shape. Use to condition and preserve all your leather cars, saddles, tack, furniture, motorcycle leather and even apparel. Prestine Clean is the perfect cleaner to use after each application of Rejuvenator Oil to remove the displaced impurities on the surface of the leather.
